Conference Assistant

Job summary

Conference Assistants (CA) are hired to assist in all facets of the Residence Halls Conference Program. Duties include administrative, clerical, and physical operations assigned in connection with the general management of the conference program. A major portion of the job is working at the service desk, assisting conference and hostel guests, mediating residential conflict, social programming and participating in an on-call duty rotation on nights and weekends.

Minimum qualifications and skills

  • Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing at Oakland University by fall 2025
  • Must have one semester of on-campus living experience
  • Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 2.75 or higher
  • Must not be found responsible for serious conduct violations

Responsibilities and duties

  • Assist in the preparation of conference housing facilities including inventorying supplies, set up at reception desks, key preparation, and decorating bulletin boards.
  • Work at the service desk to handle all aspects of mail, including package logging and equipment checkout.
  • Work in the Housing Office performing administrative tasks.
  • Serve in a duty rotation including weeknights, weekends, and summer holidays.
  • Respond to all situations involving conference guests and summer residents and notify supervisors for follow-up and emergency assistance as part of serving on duty.
  • Complete tasks, programs, and paperwork by the assigned deadlines.
  • Perform check-in and check-out procedures as assigned for conference guests and summer residents.

  • The student must live in University Housing for the duration of employment.
  • Taking classes and/or additional part-time employment, not interfering with work schedule, must be approved by the Assistant Director for Assignments and Summer Conferences. Full-time employment/internships are not allowed. Must commit to work both summer sessions with no extended vacations.

Job summary

Housing Ambassadors interact with prospective and incoming students during Undergraduate Admissions and orientation events, or other events designed to recruit prospective students. Students are trained to perform University Housing presentations and tours that accurately and enthusiastically represent the Department of University Housing.

Minimum qualifications and skills

  • Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing at Oakland University by fall 2025
  • Must have lived on campus for a minimum of one semester
  • Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 2.75 or higher

Responsibilities and duties

  • Active participation in and engagement with the marketing and recruitment plan for the Department of University Housing.
  • Interact with prospective and incoming students during orientation events or other events designed to recruit students to live on campus.
  • Provide tours of housing facilities that accurately and enthusiastically represent the Department of University Housing.
  • Support the Hillcrest Hall Housing Office as needed.

Maintenance Assistant

Job summary

Maintenance Assistants are responsible for assisting in facility operations, including trash disposal, after hours on-call coverage response, and projects that relate to facility maintenance and enhancement.

Responsibilities and duties

  • Trash pickup as directed
  • You can expect other related duties, such as supply delivery, meeting room and furniture set-ups, student room furniture set-up, cleaning of Residence Halls in the absence of full-time employees, cleaning of vacant apartments, carpet shampooing, etc. 
  • Saturday and Sunday hours are offered with flexible schedules

Qualifications and skills

  • Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing at Oakland University by fall 2025
  • Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 2.5 or higher
  • Must not be found responsible for serious conduct violations
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Desired qualification: Previous maintenance or custodial experience is preferred but not required.

Residence Life Association Executive Board Member

Job summary

The Residence Life Association (RLA) is the governing body of housing at OU. RLA members advocate for important issues within University Housing. They review policies, host programs, and discuss any concerns from residential students.

Minimum qualifications and skills

  • Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 2.5 or higher

Responsibilities and duties

President

  • Serve as the official representative of the Residence Life Association to campus
  • Preside over all RLA executive board, general body, and business meetings
  • Serve as a liaison to residential communities, graduate staff, and professional staff
  • Act as the Communications Coordinator, serving as the delegation chair for conferences hosted by the GLACURH and NACURH
  • Serve a minimum of 5 office hours a week
  • Maintain professional and timely communication with the RLA team and in the RLA email account with all executive board members.

Coordinating Officer of Logistics and Operations

  • Assume the responsibilities of the President in the absence of the President.
  • Maintain the records of RLA, including, but not limited to, meeting minutes, attendance reports, and initiative planning and execution materials.
  • Prepare and present budget reports for the weekly executive board and business meetings.
  • Responsible for the distribution and maintenance of all RLA-owned equipment
  • Serve a minimum of 5 office hours per week.
  • Maintain professional and timely communication with the RLA team and in the RLA email account with all executive board members.

Coordinating Officer of Residential Engagement

  • Work with the Coordinating Officer of Belonging and Acceptance to discuss, plan, and execute programming initiatives.
  • Survey resident opinions and feedback on what programming they would like to see in University Housing
  • Keep an updated calendar of all RLA events.
  • Lead large-scale programs such as Grizzly Greet Week, Halloween Events, Siblings Weekend, and Midnight Breakfast.
  • Create and distribute marketing materials for RLA programming initiatives throughout University Housing-operated residential facilities.
  • Responsible for coordinating attendance records of programs and events as well as notes of successes and areas of improvement
  • Serve a minimum of 5 office hours per week

Coordinating Office of Belonging and Acceptance

  • Work with the Coordinating Officer of Residential Engagement to discuss, plan, and execute programming initiatives.
  • Survey resident opinions and feedback on what programming they would like to see in University Housing
  • Keep an updated calendar of all RLA events.
  • Lead programming initiatives related to topics such as African American Heritage Celebration Month, Hispanic Heritage Celebration Month, Gender Inclusivity, Health Awareness Recognition, and Intercultural Exploration
  • Create and distribute marketing materials for RLA programming initiatives throughout University Housing-operated residential facilities.
  • Responsible for coordinating attendance records of programs and events as well as notes of successes and areas of improvement
  • Serve a minimum of 5 office hours per week

Coordinating Officer of Sustainability Initiatives (2 positions)

  • Work with Resident Assistants to manage recycling initiatives and Project Resource Center upkeep, including notifying the Advisor of any needs or changes
  • Coordinate with Coordinating Officer of Belonging and Acceptance and Coordinating Officer of Residential Engagement to ensure RLA initiatives are aligned with sustainability goals
  • Lead programming initiatives related to sustainability, such as Green Week, October Sustainability Month, and ongoing monthly programming
  • Oversee the creation and updating of residential community bulletin boards for sustainability
  • Serve a minimum of 5 office hours per week

Job summary

Resident Assistants (RA) live in the residence halls and student apartments where they advise and mentor students living on their assigned floor or building and actively encourage a positive residential environment. They offer students advice and guidance in academic, social, and financial matters and handle several administrative duties. They also help residents become acquainted with the university and residential community. 

Minimum qualifications and skills

  • Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing or be enrolled as a graduate student at Oakland University by fall 2025

Responsibilities and duties

The Resident Assistant (RA) is a student who is hired to mentor their assigned residents, as well as support all residents in their community on academic, personal, social, and financial matters. In addition, they perform administrative duties in connection with the general management of their community. A major portion of the RA’s job will be to actively influence the environment and encourage students to participate in programs and activities through leadership and availability. This job is contracted for the full academic year, including the fall and winter semesters. RAs are expected to move out at the end of their contracted period of employment.

  • Become acquainted with and build rapport with all of their assigned residents.
  • Foster a community that is supportive of all residents by promoting acceptance and understanding of diverse backgrounds.
  • Help residents adapt to living on campus as changes occur.
  • Act as a positive role model for residents.
  • Respond to emergency situations at any time of the day and night.
  • Refer residents to appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Plan and implement programs to foster community and to educate residents on issues pertinent to their development.
  • Participate in an on-call duty rotation.
  • Complete all assigned administrative work, including, but not limited to, weekly reports, duty logs, and program forms.
  • Participate in the opening and closing of the residence halls during all recess periods.
  • Support and enforce all Oakland University and University Housing policies and the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Participate in an ancillary assignment.
  • Serve as a mandated reporter for Title IX and the Clery Act. As a student employee of University Housing, you would be responsible for reporting crimes on campus. Information on the Clery Act and Title IX can be found in detail on the Oakland University Police Department's website.

Service Desk Attendants in University Housing create a welcoming environment and act as the central location for exchanging information for students and guests.

  • Provide accurate campus information and assistance to residents and guests
  • Sort and deliver mail to residents’ mailboxes
  • Sort and handle packages delivered for residents to pick up
  • Loan cleaning equipment such as vacuums to residents
  • Perform administrative duties necessary for efficient building operation

Job summary

Student Office Assistants (SOA) play a significant role in the administrative support of the front office operations by triaging phone calls, emails, and in-person visits to the main Housing Office in 448 Hamlin Hall.

  • Support key distribution and collection process
  • File paper documents and prepare mailings
  • Complete campus delivery runs as needed
  • Provide Housing tours to prospective residents
  • Connect students to relevant university resources
  • Completing daily rounds through residence hall service desks
  • Complete special projects and other tasks as needed
